Introduction

Integral to providing great smiles and facial profiles for most people, Orthodontics deals with correcting irregular, crowded, spaced or protruded teeth by moving them to desirable position using special orthodontic appliances (braces). We specialize in all aspects of orthodontic treatment for both children and adults, choosing from a wide variety of treatment options and appliances depending on the requirements of each individual patient.

Orthodontics aims not only to correct dental irregularities by moving teeth to desirable positions but also deals with correction of jaw bone discrepancies. Since the teeth are borne by the jawbones, any discrepancies in the size or position of the upper and lower jawbones leads to improperly placed teeth and poor facial esthetics. For example if the lower jaw is very small or retruded compared to the upper jaw, the patient has a ‘bird-face’ appearance and the upper front teeth appear to hang out of the mouth. Similarly an excessively growing lower jaw or underdeveloped upper jaw gives rise to a prominent chin in addition to a bad bite which is unsightly and can cause functional problems. These problems, if attended to during the actively growing age of the individual, can be corrected by growth modification therapy, wherein it is possible to accelerate or retard the growth of the upper and lower jaws by using certain specialized appliances. This is an area of special interest to us as well balanced and proportionate jawbones are paramount to an ideal smile & profile..

Need of Orthodontic Treatment

Irregular, protruded, spaced or crowded teeth are not only detrimental to one’s appearance but can also cause problems with various oral functions like chewing, swallowing and speech and impair the long term health of the dental apparatus. Irregular and crowded teeth are difficult to clean and maintain. This may contribute to tooth decay, gum disease and eventually lead to tooth loss. Other orthodontic problems can cause abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, excess and improper stresses on gum tissue, supporting bone and the jaw joints with resultant chronic headaches or pain in the face or neck. If left untreated, many orthodontic problems progressively worsen with time. Moving teeth into their correct positions by orthodontic treatment not only improves the health and functioning of the dentition, but also achieves a harmonious relationship between the teeth, lips and face. The importance of an attractive smile and pleasant face should not be underestimated and is vital to one’s self confidence. In this way, orthodontic treatment can improve how an individual is perceived by himself and others and has a positive influence on one’s social and professional life.
